Art Deco Napier

Napier is known around the world as the Art Deco Capital. After a devastating earthquake in 1931 flattened most of the city centre, Napier was rebuilt in the architectural style of the time — Art Deco. Today, the city has one of the most complete collections of Art Deco buildings anywhere in the world. Here's how to make the most of it.

The 1931 Earthquake

On 3 February 1931, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Hawke's Bay, killing 256 people and levelling most of Napier's commercial centre. Fires broke out across the city, destroying whatever the quake had left standing. In the rebuild that followed, architects designed buildings in the fashionable Art Deco and Spanish Mission styles of the era — giving Napier the distinctive look it still carries today.

The Daily Telegraph Building

One of the most photographed buildings in Napier. Designed by E.A. Williams in 1932, it features zigzag patterns, sunbursts, and geometric shapes that define the Art Deco style. It sits on the corner of Tennyson Street and is a must-see on any walk through town.

Just across the railway line in Ahuriri, this 1933 building is considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Southern Hemisphere. The roses, raupo, and geometric details on the exterior are incredible. Definitely worth the short walk from the main strip.

Tennyson Street & Emerson Street

The heart of Art Deco Napier. Walk down these two streets in the city centre and you'll see dozens of restored facades — pastel colours, curved parapets, symmetrical lines, and ornamental details everywhere. Many of the buildings now house cafes, shops, and bars, so it's easy to combine sightseeing with a stop for food.

The Art Deco Festival

Every February, thousands of people dress in 1930s attire and descend on Napier for the world-famous Art Deco Festival. There's vintage cars, live jazz, swing dancing, parades, and the whole city gets into the spirit. If you're planning a trip, it's worth timing it around the festival. Winter Deco in July is the smaller sibling event.
