Walk to Bluff Hill Lookout from Napier town

If you are visiting Napier from a cruise ship or have a few hours in town, Bluff Hill Lookout is a rewarding walk for a big harbour view. This route starts by the waterfront at Ocean Spa, then climbs through Centennial Gardens, Priestley Road and Sturms Gully.

It is an uphill walk with stairs and uneven paths in places, so take your time. The photos below show the landmarks to look out for as you make your way from town to the lookout.

1. Start at Ocean Spa and head for Centennial Gardens

From the Ocean Spa car park on Napier's waterfront, head toward Centennial Gardens. It is a useful first landmark when you have arrived in town from the cruise shuttle or a waterfront stroll.

Enter the gardens and follow the paths toward the hill. This quieter section is a gentle change from the open waterfront before the climb begins.

2. Follow the path toward Priestley Road

Keep following the route up from Centennial Gardens toward Priestley Road. The elevation starts to show here, so this is a good point to slow down, take in the gardens and keep an eye out for the next path connection.

Stay on public paths and footpaths, and be considerate of the homes and driveways around the hill.

3. Continue through Sturms Gully

Sturms Gully brings a sheltered, leafy stretch to the route. Follow the public path and use the photos as a reference point rather than a substitute for signs or a live map.

If you are unsure at any junction, pause and check your map before continuing uphill.

4. Take the stairs and keep climbing

The stairs are the clearest sign that you are on the way up. They are part of what makes this a proper hill walk rather than a flat town wander, so use the handrails where provided and take breaks as needed.

On wet days, take extra care: steps and leaves can be slippery.

5. Reach Bluff Hill Lookout

At the top, the lookout opens out across the Port of Napier, the bay and the hills beyond. It is a great place to stop for photos before heading back to town.

When you are ready to return, retrace the same route if it felt comfortable, or use your map to choose another public walking route back into central Napier.
